MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner nearly erased all memory of an abysmal offensive half Monday before its comeback effort fell short in a 64-60 loss to Middle Georgia State.
The Lady Eagles managed just 18 points and four made field goals in the first half and trailed by as many as 16 in the second half before beginning to slice into the deficit. The Lady Eagles mounted a 21-10 run over the final 7:05 of the third quarter to pull the game within reach.
Ashlyn Adkins drew a foul on a desperation heave by the scorer's table as time expired in the frame. She made two of the corresponding free throws to leave Faulkner down 47-42 heading into the fourth quarter.
Faulkner fell behind by seven with 6:59 to play before mounting its last push.
Channing Gafford knocked down a three to cut it to four.
Nequoia Adams hit another three with 5:45 to go to cut the deficit to 52-51. Adams then muscled up a layup through contact at the 5:08 mark to put Faulkner up 53-52.
Destanee Wright connected on a bucket eight seconds later to put MGA back in front. Adkins made a layup with 46 seconds left to tie the game at 60. Wright answered at the other end again with a layup through contact. She made the bonus free throw to leave the Knights up 63-60. Adkins went to take the potential game-tying three just ahead of the buzzer. Jurnee Powell notched the block to ice the game.
Faulkner shot 33.3 percent from the floor in the game and 27 percent from three. The Lady Eagles won the rebound battle 40-37.
Wright paced the Knights with 24 points. Gafford topped Faulkner with 21 points while Adkins had 19.
Angela Grant pulled 13 rebounds and had five blocks.
Faulkner (15-12, 8-7 SSAC) finishes the regular season Saturday when it hosts Mobile at 12 p.m.
