Defense stands tall as Faulkner holds off Point

VALLEY, Ala. – Defense proved to be the calling card Saturday as Faulkner held on to beat Point 14-10 in the final tune-up before Mid-South Conference play.
Trailing 14-10, Point began its final possession at its own 46 with 2:11 left on the clock and a timeout in its pocket. The threat ended with back-to-back pass breakups by Jailen Clemons, who had his stamp all over Faulkner's defensive outing. Clemons thwarted a touchdown bid on the first Skyhawk possession of the game when he intercepted a pass in the end zone with 9:07 left in the opening quarter. He picked off another Point pass with 2:37 left in the contest, giving
Faulkner an opportunity to seal the game. The Eagles punted the ball away just 20 seconds later, setting up the decisive sequence of the contest.

Most of the scoring occurred in the final five minutes of the second quarter. Giovanni Martinez accounted for the first points of the game when he connected on a 25-yard field goal attempt to put Point up 3-0 with 4:59 left in the opening half.

Raequan Beal answered with his best drive as an Eagle. The sophomore quarterback engineered a 64-yard march in which he completed five out of his six pass attempts, punctuating it with a 10-yard scoring strike to T.J. Hall. Caden Davis added the PAT for the 7-3 lead with 2:22 left in the half. The Eagles landed the biggest blow of the game with 51 seconds left before halftime when Jerrell Williamson intercepted a pass and took it 85 yards for a touchdown.

The Skyhawks got their final points with 8:39 left in the fourth quarter when Mitchell Gossett found Nadir Mitchell from 10 yards out.

Faulkner lost nearly all of the key statistical categories while managing to win the game. Point outpaced Faulkner 21-11 in first downs and 335-164 in total offense. The Skyhawks converted more than half of their third down attempts while Faulkner proved successful on only 25 percent of its 16 such efforts.

Hall caught five passes for 59 yards to lead the receiving corps. JaMichael Morgan and Samaj Washington each recorded a sack on defense. Williamson topped the total tackles column with nine.

Faulkner (1-1) travels to face No. 15 Georgetown Saturday, Sept. 17 in the opening of Mid-South Conference competition.
