MOBILE, Ala. - It took two overtimes to settle the in-state rivalry as Faulkner wound up on the losing side of a 83-80 decision as the Rams found timely runs to take the win Saturday afternoon despite
Sean McCurdy's insane 17-17 double-double.
In the second overtime period, Mobile countered
Jayden Cooper's second overtime opening bucket with a 7-0 run before
J.C. Norris knocked down a triple. Mobile answered right back with an Ezra McKenna basket to take a four point lead with 2:15 to play.
Sean McCurdy knocked down both free throws just over a minute later to bring the deficit to 80-78 but McKenna responded once again with a layup.
Jonathan Garcia got his own offensive board and McCurdy cashed in two more on the ensuing possession. The Eagles defended the Mobile possession with 36 seconds to play instead of intentionally fouling with the Rams in the double bonus and got the initial stop but could not grab the rebound and could not find a tying three after the Rams hit one of the two ensuing free throws.Â
Faulkner led by nine with 4:01 to play in regulation against a team that went to NCAA D1 South Alabama and smacked the Sun Belt side in their gym but found just one field goal, a three from Cooper, to break the deadlock the Rams forced at 1:44. Mobile knocked down a pair of free throws and hit a layup to take the lead with 28 seconds to go and Garcia knocked down the tying free throw on the back end of his two shots.Â
McCurdy set Faulkner highs in both points and boards in the loss. His 17 rebounds tied for third most in program history, most against an SSAC foe and the second most against an NAIA opponent.
J.C. Norris led the team with 18 points.
Jayden Cooper added 17.
T.J. Williams added 12 with seven rebounds. Garcia was one point shy of a double-double with 11 rebounds.Â
Faulkner heads to the Battle at the Beach in Panama City, Fla. to take on Warner Monday evening to try to snap a three game losing streak.Â
