MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner did not have the horses to finish a late comeback attempt Saturday as it fell to Montreat College 85-79. The Eagles trailed by 14 with 6:23 to play before they started their charge.
Jayden Cooper and
T.J. Williams combined for a 7-0 run to get Faulkner back in it. Cooper hit a three at the 2:30 mark before a
J.C. Norris layup to cut it to 79-75 with 2:12 to play.
After a pair of Jamiel Wright free throws set the Cavalier lead back to six,
Jonathan Garcia knocked down a three with 1:11 left to narrow the gap to 81-78. Faulkner could draw no closer.
Montreat won the rebound battle 42-38 and made 15 three-pointers in the game while also knocking down 12 of 16 free throws. The Cavaliers also had 19 second chance points. For its part, Faulkner had 22 assists on 32 made baskets and shot 51.6 percent from the floor.
Williams finished with his second consecutive double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Victor Muñoz had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Cooper notched 19 points and five assists.
Faulkner (7-6, 2-3 SSAC) returns to action Dec. 30 when it travels to Blue Mountain Christian.
