Late-inning heroics lift Carey to sweep of Faulkner

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The bottom of the sixth proved a challenging frame for Faulkner twice Saturday as it dropped both ends of a doubleheader to No. 12 William Carey, extending its losing skid to five consecutive games.

WILLIAM CAREY 1, FAULKNER 0

Julianna Thames and Ryanne Hornsby each proved efficient in an impressive pitchers' duel that saw the game scoreless until there were two away in the bottom of the sixth. At that point, Susie LeBert doubled and gave way to pinch runner Kinley Hogue. Hornsby then helped her own cause with a single up the middle to drive in the run and give herself the 1-0 lead.

Faulkner gave itself a chance with a two-out rally in the top of the seventh. AnnaMarie Stooksbury singled to right and gave way to pinch runner Abby Terrell. Ivey Hill followed with a single to center to keep the game alive before Hornsby recorded her fifth strikeout to end the ball game.

Thames used 75 pitches to work six innings and keep the Crusaders off balance. Hornsby (9-0) limited Faulkner to three hits and two walks, using 89 pitches in the complete game shutout.

WILLIAM CAREY 3, FAULKNER 2

Faulkner appeared poised to win the second game of the day before the sixth inning again proved the undoing for the Lady Eagles. Stooksbury doubled home Anna Purvis in the sixth to give Faulkner a 2-1 lead that proved short-lived. Hogue singled home Hannah Dufault to tie the game with one away in the bottom of the sixth. Brooke Tanner delivered the game-winning hit with a single that plated Albanie Fussell.

Colby Adams singled to open the top of the seventh for Faulkner, giving way to pinch runner Kaileigh Harrison. A sacrifice bunt got Harrison to second base and a grounder got her to third but the tying run could advance no further.

Hornsby worked three innings of relief to pick up her 10th win of the season. Katelynn Inness (2-4) struck out seven over six while allowing seven hits and four walks.

Faulkner (6-9, 0-4 SSAC) plays at Southeastern Baptist Monday before hosting Blue Mountain Friday and Stillman Saturday.
