Lady Eagles turnover SSAC opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The final stretch of the fourth quarter proved disastrous for Faulkner as it lost its SSAC opener to Tennessee Southern 66-61 Thursday night.

The Lady Eagles opened up the largest lead of the night with 4:27 to play when Keyarra Scottland converted a layup to put her team ahead 59-49. From there, the visiting Firehawks put together a 14-0 run to go up 63-59 with 12 seconds remaining. Scottland made a layup off a Sydney Steward pass with nine seconds to play, marking the first Lady Eagle points in more than four minutes of action. During that time, Faulkner turned the ball over five times, ending the night with 25 donations to the UTS cause.

Faulkner took the rebound battle 46-43 and shot 34.5 percent from the floor in the game while UTS finished at 32-9 percent.

Scottland had 16 points to lead the way for Faulkner while Ruthie Smith matched her with 16 to go along with 12 rebounds. Grace Anne Rose notched her first career double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.

Faulkner (2-2, 0-1 SSAC) plays at noon Saturday at Blue Mountain Christian before returning home Tuesday to host Middle Georgia State at 5:30 p.m.
