MONTGOMERY, Ala. –
Rob Gray tendered his resignation Monday, bringing to a close the tenure of the seventh head football coach in Faulkner University history. Gray leaves Faulkner with a record of 16-25, giving him the second-highest win total in program history.
"We're thankful for Rob and all he did for our program over the last several years," Faulkner University Vice President of Athletics Hal Wynn said. "He and his family have been very committed to the Faulkner community and I am confident they will be very successful wherever they go next."
Gray took over the program in 2021, leading the Eagles to an 8-2 season and a national ranking that left them just outside the NAIA playoff picture. Faulkner followed that campaign with a 4-7 record in 2022 and consecutive seasons of 2-8.
Gray began his Faulkner run as a defensive backs coach on the 2019 staff before elevating to associate head coach in 2020, a position that helped prepare him to succeed Tommy Wasden one season later.
Randy Ragsdale will lead the program in the interim while the search takes place for the program's eighth head coach.
Having served for 28 years at Trinity Presbyterian School in Montgomery, Ragsdale joined the Faulkner football staff in 2021. A member of the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame, Ragsdale served as Associate Head Coach for the Eagles and has been responsible for player development.
