MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Eagles got long-range goals from
Caio Pereira and Caio de Luna Gomes to defeat New College of Florida 2-1 Saturday afternoon at a scorching hot Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.
Matteo Scarduzio (2-1-1) made a massive save in the 28th minute when a cross skipped over the defense and found an open goal for the Mighty Banyan's striker Kais Sabic. Access was denied by the Italian keeper who robbed the French forward of the opening goal with a left-handed diving save.Â
About six minutes later, Faulkner (2-1-1) returned the favor on the other end. With New College (1-1-1) in possession, Pereira pressed the keeper and forced a turnover that Gomes settled and found Pereira for a one-two before Gomes found
Alex Barros who passed to Pereira in the middle of the box who rocketed home a right footed shot into the top left corner for the opening goal. It was his sixth goal as an Eagle. Barros now has a goal contribution in each of the three games he has played. Faulkner preserved the lead into the half.Â
Just six minutes after the interval, it was the Banyans' turn for a long range strike as Alexander Greaves struck from 30 yards out with a top bins shot of his own. However, the tie was short lived as 19 minutes later,
Leo Freire found
Tiago Miki who's first touch pass found Gomes alone atop the box. A first touch, left-footed half volley from Gomes found the back of the net expeditiously and proved to be the match winner.Â
Both teams had some excellent chances robbed by the opposing keepers and Mathis Leveque prevented several golden opportunities for the Eagles from cashing in.Â
Faulkner held the Banyans to just three shots on goal with Scarduzio stopping two.Â
The Eagles now head to Tennessee next week to take on No. 19 Cumberland on the road in a return fixture of the 2-0 home win last season over the Phoenix.Â
