SHREVEPORT, La. - Just over 24 hours after a full campus send-off and less than 24 hours from competing in its first NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship, Faulkner is on the road making final preparations to take on the No. 7 LSU Shreveport Pilots.
National History
Faulkner has never been to the national tournament on the men's side. This is just the second time that either the men's or women's soccer programs made the national tournament as the women reached in 2012.
LSU Shreveport is in the field for the fourth straight season and the fifth time in program history. LSUS defeated Mid-America Christian on the road last season to get to the final site for the first time ever where they fell in the round of 16 to Bellevue.
Star Power
As you'd expect to see in the national tournament field, both teams are littered with talent. The talent is obviously not just limited to the stars, but depth throughout the roster.
Both teams have four first team all-conference selections with Faulkner's
Angel Ugwumba,
Konsti Witte,
Leo Freire and
Asaph Silveira. Those four have combined for 30 goals and 12 assists.
LSU Shreveport's Jack Thomas, Caleb Marchany, Jami Zani and Aksei Battal. The quartet has combined for 32 goals and 22 assists.
Coaches
Faulkner Head Coach Gabriel de Queiroz is in his fifth full-time season and has been head coach for 5.5 years and has amassed the best win percentage in program history.
LSUS Head Coach Adam Kay is in his third full-time season and was named the RRAC Coach of the Year and has a 43-12-10 record with the Pilots.
Both coaches have had success in the semi-professional coaching ranks as well.
Stakes
The winner will head to Orange Beach, Ala. to play either Dec. 1 or 2 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in the Round of 16 against either Keiser (Fla.) or Warner Pacific (Ore.) who kickoff in West Palm Beach, Fla. 30 minutes before this contest.
LSUS drew the 13th seed in the event with Keiser drawing the fourth seed.
Series History
The Eagles have not played in Shreveport since 2012. Faulkner is 0-2 all-time, both road matches, with the other meeting coming in 2009.
