MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner fell in a heartbreaker in the Collegiate Development League final 2-1 to US Sports University, seeing a late lead turn to a loss in two minutes Monday night at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.
USSU pinned Faulkner back for the first 15 minutes but could not challenge
Alejandro Sojo before a bad back pass from US Sports University was picked off by Vinicius De Souza creating the best chance in the early offing before building a couple more chances to follow but only one shot from
Arthur Dias Klostermann manifest.
The match opened up but neither team threatened strongly towards goal with just one shot on frame in the first 45 minutes. However, with two seconds left in the half, US Sports's Kipper Miller slid in recklessly and received a red card, giving the man-advantage to Faulkner for the second half.
A hot shot from Kidomo Albert tested Sojo in the 51st minute, but the Chilean keeper stopped it. A minute later, Nathan Webb fired a low shot that Sojo had to save again to preserve the tie.
Jorge Santamaria pulled down Esteban Weimann who was in on goal in the 54th minute. Weimann took the ensuing free kick and it was parried off the crossbar but followed up by
Anton Matanovic who put the ball in the empty net to take the lead.
Esteban Flores saw a chance to double the lead carom off the crossbar in the 70th minute.
US Sports was given a penalty in the 79th minute after a set piece scramble at the top of the box. Albert stutter stepped up and rolled it in to level it. Just two minutes later, Jhonathan Santaclara-Enriquez headed the ball in off a second effort cross to put the visitors in the lead.
Gianmarco Re pinged the crossbar off a free kick in the 84th minute with a chance to equalize but Faulkner could not get any closer.
The Eagles finish the season as Collegiate Development League runners up for the second straight season. Faulkner concludes its 2025 season with a 6-2 record.
