MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner claimed a number of awards, highlighted by
Ruthie Smith's first team and
Keyarra Scottland placing on the all-freshman team, as announced Wednesday night at the SSAC Awards Banquet.
Ruthie Smith earned First Team All-SSAC honors, becoming the ninth different Lady Eagle to earn a spot on the first team for the 19th total accolade since the program began in the 2010-2011 season. Smith, a native of Rogersville, Alabama, entered the postseason averaging 17.4 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, which ranked third and second in the league, respectively and is the only SSAC women's basketball student-athlete in the top five of both lists. She also averages just a shade under two blocks per game. She has double figures in 22 of the 25 games she's played in with two of the contests being less than 20 minutes on the floor. Her biggest individual performance of the season came in a road win at Middle Georgia with 29 points and 19 rebounds.Â
Keyarra Scottland placed on the all-freshman team, earning an honor on the list of the five best freshmen in the SSAC for the fifth straight season and the 10th time overall. Scottland, a native of Warrior, Alabama, averages 10 points per game and has 13 double-digit scoring outputs in her first collegiate campaign. She is shooting 40.2 percent from the floor and is just under one steal per game on average with two assists.
Numerous academic awards as well as the Champions of Character award were given to Faulkner student-athletes and will be detailed in a later story.
