FAIRHOPE, Ala. - Faulkner scored three times in six minutes to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead which would be sufficient for the 3-2 win over Webber International Thursday afternoon at the Fairhope Soccer Complex.
The defense set the tone, allowing just one shot on goal from open play in the match and allowed the offense to press forward. The Eagles shot 24 times in the contest finding 12 on frame.Â
Through the first half Faulkner shot 10 times with five on target but could not get past the Sun Conference Defender of the Week Alvaro Garcia who stopped five first half efforts. The Warriors shot just once on frame in the opening 45 and it was a free kick from Miguel da Silva in the 38th minute just outside the box that banked off the post and in to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Faulkner adjusted at halftime and came out firing, shooting the first nine shots of the second half before flipping the match on its head in the 69th minute.
Angel Ugwumba got his head on the end of a
Joel Gomez cross and headed it high and off the keeper's hands into the goal for his fifth goal of the season. In the 73rd minute,
Julio Cesar scored his first goal of the year as
Gunner Blanchard and
Konsti Witte linked up to create the easy tap home by the goal scorer who moved into eighth place all-time for goals scored with his 14th career tally.Â
Witte scored his fourth goal in the last two matches with his 75th minute goal that proved to be the match winner following up on an effort from Cesar. It was his fifth goal of the season and 10th of his career, making him the 14th Eagle to hit double figure goals.Â
The Eagles surrendered a penalty in the 84th minute which the Warriors converted to make the final minutes even more hectic, however, the Eagles held on for the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.
Faulkner travels back to Fairhope Sunday to take on Xavier (La.) for a 4 p.m. kickoff against a Gold Rush side that is effectively 26th in the first poll and coming off a 4-0 win against William Carey.
