MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Seven goals fueled an important three points for the Lady Eagles in a 7-1 win over Andrew College on Senior Day Saturday night at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium in SSAC play.
The Lady Eagles struck early and often through
Cassie Jackson and
Gabriela Garzon Valero who combined for all seven scores with
DeAireal Williams offering up three assists.
Jackson opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Williams passed to her on the near post where the senior squeezed the shot between the keeper and the post for the first goal. In the 27th, Jackson was fouled in the penalty area and converted the spot kick to make it back-to-back matches with two goals.
Five minutes later, Valero got on the end of a back-post cross from Williams to tap in the third goal of the evening and score her first since Sept. 5 and second of her season. The wait was not quite as long for her third goal of her freshman campaign. Three minutes later, she cut inside from the left wing before firing a right-footed shot past the keeper to make it 4-0 where it would remain at halftime with an 18-0 advantage in shots.
Faulkner scored just 45 seconds into the half as Williams picked up her third assist, crossing to Jackson for her third goal. 10 minutes later, Valero played a perfect through ball for Jackson who touched to the left before finishing to the right to score her fourth and move her into second all-time in career goals for Faulkner. Five minutes later, Valero cut inside from the left wing again and whipped a shot to the far post and in to make it 7-0.
The Lady Eagles conceded a late goal to the Fighting Tigers on the lone shot surrendered in the game.
Faulkner sits eighth, tied with Point for the final spot in the SSAC Championship and having the head-to-head tiebreak over the Skyhawks with two games to play for each, controlling its own destiny. Faulkner travels to Wesleyan for the first SSAC meeting between the sides Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
