LIMA, Peru - The chance to wear your home country's jersey in international competition is always an honor. Being named captain raises the honor another degree. It's now something bestowed upon KJ Rogers who will captain the US Virgin Islands in the International University Sports Federation–or better known by its French acronym, FISU–America Games July 21-27 in Peru's capital. 

"It means the world to me," Rogers said about getting to represent his home. "I can show the world that the islands may be small but we got a big heart and big talented guys. From young, I always wanted to play for my country and showcase what God had given me."

"First he's an unbelievable young man," Head Coach Scott Sanderson said. "He has super talent and athleticism. He's a great person to represent Faulkner Basketball and the University and I'm excited for him!"

Rogers says his time at Faulkner helped grow his confidence to be prepared for this stage. "The people mostly helped me with my self confidence and my coaches and teammates pushed me every day to be the best that I can be." 

The Virgin Islands will take on hosts Peru Wednesday at 5 p.m. to start the tournament. Thursday features a chance to showcase against the United States who are represented by the blue-blood program Indiana Hoosiers. The other pool features Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Argentina. The top two in each pool will advance to Saturday's semifinals with the title game set for Sunday. 

The games are slated to be streamed on FISU America's YouTube. Fans can follow the scores and stats on the FISU site. 

FISU states on its website "the world's universities are not only places of learning but also provide sport opportunities for their students. This may be in offering competitive sport among universities, recreational opportunities, or even sport related education. Healthy living, wellbeing, and experiences from sport are all valuable elements that students receive demonstrating that universities play an important role in the promotion and delivery of sport.'

Rogers is the second Faulkner athlete to compete on the international stage this season after Alex Carrillo pitched for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic in March.
