Drake, second-half surge lifts Faulkner past Point 80-60

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A chilly afternoon inside Tine Davis Gymnasium heated up in a hurry in the second half for Faulkner, as the Eagles blistered the nets after the break en route to an 80-60 victory over Point here Saturday in a non-conference matchup.

After missing 14 of 15 long-range shots in the first half, which ended with the Skyhawks leading by three, Faulkner found the range in the final 20 minutes. Nick Drake hit six straight from behind the arc and Lucas Luttrell added two more as the Eagles raced away. Having shot just 29 percent in the first half, Scott Sanderson's team connected on a blistering  61 percent in the second, knocking out the Skyhawks down the stretch.

A 15-2 stretch capped by Drake's driving basket handed Faulkner a 55-45 lead, and it steadily grew from there. The final margin of 20 was the game's largest. Drake finished with 26 points, 21 of which came in the second half. Monta Sanford added a double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Lucas Luttrell was also in double figures, contributing 14.

Point (1-12) got 15 points from Darrin Clark, 11 from Traevon Gresham and 10 from Cory Carswell.

"We have signs in our locker room in my office, all over the place, about the importance of playing with confidence, and I thought in the second half we certainly did that," said Sanderson of his Eagles, who improved to 4-5 with the victory. "Hopefully this is something we can build on as we continue to try to improve and establish an identity."

Faulkner began the game sharp, using good motion and ball movement to grab an early lead. A Monta Sanford basket with 7:45 to play in the half gave Faulkner a 23-17 advantage, but it would be the final bucket of the period for the Eagles. Drake and Alex Anderson each hit a pair of free throws as the lead grew to 27-19. The Skyhawks, however, scored the final 11 points of the half and were on top 30-27 heading to the locker room.

Faulkner began the game hitting six of its first seven attempts from the field, but finished the half hitting only 29 percent. From behind the arc, the Eagles were ice cold in the opening 20 minutes, converting one of 15 tries.

Faulkner travels to Talladega Friday night to face the third-ranked Tornadoes. The game tips off at 7.
