Box Score Faulkner celebrated the tip-off of the 2018 season with a 118-82 romp over Point University in the opener of The Jimmy Faulkner Classic Friday night. The occasion marked only the second time in seven seasons the Eagles have hit the century mark in scoring.
More impressive than the points output against Point, according to Head Coach Scott Sanderson, was his team's efficiency in the opener.
"I think we shared the ball well. I think we passed the ball extremely well. We had 24 assists tonight on 40 baskets. When you can have that many assists, that's a really good thing," Sanderson said.
C.J. Jones (JR/Port Richey, Fla.), Nate Bradley (JR/Concord, N.Y.) and Sean Edwards (SR/Madison, Ala.) each tallied at least four assists in the contest to lead a group of 11 Eagles that dished out dimes Friday. Faulkner also proved adept with the shooting stroke, converting on 50 percent of its field goal attempts, 42.5 percent of its shots from deep, and 72.2 percent of its free throws.
The level of offensive output came as a pleasant surprise for the Eagles, who are just learning how to play with one another after introducing plenty of new faces to the roster for the 2018-2019 season.
"We've got a lot of new guys on our team. We had several guys that were sitting out that are a big part of it, C.J. being one of them that played last year but didn't play quite as much. Milan didn't play last year but was a part of our program. Then we have several new guys also," Sanderson said.
Jones made the most of his season debut, scoring 30 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Edwards had 17 points and seven rebounds. Milan Skundric (JR/Negotin, Serbia) notched 14 points and five boards. Trace Hill (FR/Hartselle, Ala.) scored 13 while Adnan Halilovic (SR/Mali Zvornik, Serbia) finished with 11 points. Jacob Spence (JR/Fernandina Beach, Fla.) scored 10 points for the Eagles.
Faulkner caps The Classic Saturday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Voorhees College.
