Faulkner sets school record for largest margin of victory

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –  Faulkner took control from the outset Saturday on the way to the second 70-point output in school history in a 73-7 victory over Cincinnati Christian.

"I challenged them to be a mature football team and I thought we stepped up and did that," Faulkner coach Shayne Wasden said. "We played a team that we were better than. A lot of times, you don't go out and show that you're better than somebody. Our guys went out and took care of business. The things we needed to improve on, we did."

After Kylan Cotton (SR/Spanish Fort, Ala.) intercepted a pass to hand Faulkner its first possession, Mason Blocker (JR/Covington, La.) hit Reagan Amos (SR/Woodstock, Ga.) for a 58-yard catch-and-run on the hosting Eagles' first snap for a 7-0 lead.

Blocker went on to hit Jacob Pigg (JR/Fayetteville, Tenn.) for a 25-yard score, Cordara Laurant (FR/Covington, La.) for a 40-yard touchdown and Terrance Sims (SR/Pensacola, Fla.) for a 10-yard end zone strike before retiring for the afternoon midway through the second quarter.

Jamario Dixon (JR/Jackson, Miss.) pushed it to a five-touchdown lead when he blocked a punt and scooped up the bouncing ball to step into the end zone for the 35-0 lead. D'Arie Johnson (FR/Birmingham, Ala.) scored on a 74-yard run before Charles Blackmon (FR/Faunsdale, Ala.) sprinted in from 21 yards out for the 49-0 halftime lead.

Sims returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter 76 yards for a touchdown to push the lead to 56-0. Austin Seymour (SR/Harvest, Ala.) scored touchdown runs of 15 yards and 2 yards. Logan Roberts (SO/Tallahassee, Fla.) added a 23-yard field goal.

Cincinnati Christian got its lone score when Alex Duran passed to Riquetio Leonard for a 31-yard touchdown with 14:51 remaining in the game.

The 73 points marked the second highest point total in Faulkner history and the largest margin of victory for the program. The Eagles beat Kentucky Christian 63-8 on Aug. 26, 2017 for their previous high.

"We needed to worry about Faulkner and that's what we did," Wasden said.

Blackmon paced all rushers with 106 yards on eight carries. Justin Lewis (FR/Montgomery, Ala.) added 95 yards on five rushes while Johnson had 92 yards on four carries. Blocker was 11 of 12 for 177 yards on the day. Faulkner tallied 600 yards of total offense on the day while running only 51 plays.

Faulkner (3-1) travels to Ave Maria next Saturday.
