Long ball lifts Eagles over error prone Selma

Box Score

Faulkner fell behind 1-0 in the second before hanging eight unearned runs in the third and fourth to improve to 35-10 on the season Wednesday afternoon on Selma University's campus. Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) launched two home runs for six RBIs including the go-ahead bomb in the third inning.

Selma opened the scoring on a triple from Alexander Humphrey, but the defense didn't support the Bulldog lead for long. Three of the first four batters for Faulkner in the third frame reached on an error. John Michael Mathews (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) flared a pop up to shallow left and Bulldog second baseman Devon Pedro dropped the routine catch. Trystin Raikes (JR/Ottawa, Ill.) rolled a grounder to third but the ball was misplayed by the third baseman to put two runners on. Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) made it to first on a wild throw from Pedro as he tried to turn the double play after retiring Raikes. The error allowed Mathews to score the tying run. Guzman came to the plate and crushed a 3-1 pitch to left field for his 10th dinger of the season to put the Eagles ahead 4-1.

The guests allowed a run in the bottom half of the frame but duplicated their four run inning the next time at the dish. The fourth inning started just like the third, with a Selma error. Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio) looked to be out until the throw to first popped out of the glove of Marcus Hardy. Myron Mebane (SR/Tallahassee, Fla.)'s single up the middle scored Black. Tyler Paulson's single put two runners on for Ragan. The center fielder drove a 1-2 pitch to deep center for a two run double. Te'kwaan Whyte (SR/Stone Mountain, Ga.) drove home Ragan with a single to right. Selma would drive in a run of its own in the home half for an 8-3 score line after 4.

A sacrifice fly from Raikes scored Black who drew a leadoff walk in the fifth. Whyte found his fourth home run of the season with a solo shot to right in the sixth. Selma drew within six in the bottom of the seventh. The top of the eighth saw Guzman blister the 0-1 pitch to center for his 11th home run of the season to score three.

Kyle Laberge (JR/Mansfield, Texas) picked up the win scattering eight hits with five strikeouts allowing three runs in five innings. Jacob Hulcher (SR/Montgomery, Ala.) and Zack Glines (JR/Dalton, Ga.) each recored a strikeout in their set up work before Michael Byrne (JR/Cleveland, Ohio) fanned two Bulldogs and the bottom of the ninth to shut the door.

Faulkner will host Stillman for a weekend SSAC series starting Friday at 6 p.m. The Eagles' magic number is down to four with six league games left.
