Defense, special teams spur Faulkner past Cincinnati Christian

Box Score

On a day in which the offense struggled to find continuity, Faulkner's defense answered the call with an impressive performance to anchor a 28-7 win over Cincinnati Christian.

After a Jackson Bruno (SO/Huntsville, Ala.) punt hemmed CCU at its own four for its opening possession of the second half, Daylon Fox (SR/Southaven, Miss.) intercepted a pass and took it back seven yards for a touchdown. The Faulkner lead ballooned with 3:35 to go in the third quarter when Neino Robinson (FR/Century, Fla.) returned a punt 50 yards for a touchdown, pushing the advantage to 21-7.

The home standing Eagles put the game away early in the fourth quarter. After Ovurton Gates (JR/Baldwyn, Miss.) intercepted a pass and returned it inside the red zone, Mason Blocker (SR/Covington, La.) hit Isaiah Scott (FR/Linden, Ala.) on a 13-yard scoring strike. The touchdown was the second of the day for Scott, who hauled in a 78-yard touchdown with 5:54 left in the first half to open the scoring. Cincinnati Christian answered that score quickly as Derrick Taylor connected with Christian Williams from 33 yards away.

Faulkner tallied 299 yards of total offense in the game while running just 56 plays. Scott paced the effort with 118 yards receiving and two touchdowns on seven receptions. Josh Gaines (SR/Birmingham, Ala.) headed the rushing attack with 65 yards on 11 carries.

Faulkner held Cincinnati Christian to 325 yards of total offense while intercepting four passes and recording four sacks. Lincoln Tulimasealii (SR/Anchorage, Alaska) and JaMichael Morgan (FR/Ellisville, Miss.) each finished with six total tackles and a sack. Devin Sampson (SO/Tallahassee, Fla.) notched a sack while Ke'Lontae Varner (FR/Birmingham, Ala.) had four total tackles and a sack. Fox set the defensive pace with 11 total tackles, an interception, a fumble recovery and a touchdown. Neikel Robinson (SO/Century, Fla.) had two interceptions to go along with four tackles.

Faulkner (2-1) returns to action Oct. 5 when it travels to West Palm Beach, Fla. to face (RV) Keiser University.
