Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | by: Jeremy Smith

Free throws, defense propel Faulkner over Covenant

On a night when the offense scuffled, Faulkner found a way to hold off a late charge from Covenant College and win its first game in exactly two months. The Lady Eagles went 7-for-8 from the free throw line in the final minute to ice a 57-51 victory.

Faulkner trailed 45-44 with 5:51 remaining in the contest after a Megan Rouse shot gave the Scots their first lead of the night. The Lady Eagles recaptured the advantage on a Ryann Sylvester bucket with 4:31 left before stretching the lead to five on consecutive Jacie Andrews field goals. After Cosette Kirsch hit a triple with 1:02 on the clock, Channing Gafford, Micala Fisanick and Andrews combined to make seven free throws in the final minute for the win.

Faulkner shot 25 percent from the floor and 14 percent from three in the game. The Lady Eagles managed to hit 80 percent of their free throw attempts to go along with a strong defensive performance to anchor the win.

Faulkner held Covenant to 27 percent shooting and 26 percent from three while forcing 25 turnovers in the game.

Fisanick paced Faulkner with 15 points to go along with four rebounds and six steals. Andrews finished with 11 points while Holland had 10.

The Lady Eagles move to 2-3 on the season after having sat 45 days between games prior to Tuesday's contest against Bethel. Faulkner's last win came in its season opener Halloween night against Pensacola Christian before COVID issues at multiple schools forced numerous cancelations.

Faulkner plays again Sunday at 2 p.m. on the road in a non-conference game against SSAC foe Loyola.
