Sluggish third quarter dooms Faulkner against Loyola

NEW ORLEANS - Faulkner was unable to thwart a 16-3 Loyola run that opened the third quarter and flipped the game in favor of the Wolfpack during an 85-77 loss Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles were up 38-33 coming out of half when Loyola erupted during the game-defining run that saw six different players score over the first 4:17 of the third period. The Wolfpack got the lead to 12 by the end of the third quarter while shooting nearly 62 percent from the floor. Loyola continued the offensive onslaught in the fourth quarter, running the advantage as high as 18 points with 3:56 to play.

For its part, Faulkner found some of its best offensive play of the season in the final minutes as it closed the game on a 15-5 run. Ashlyn Adkins accounted for 13 consecutive Faulkner points before Evaiah Burrows scored the final bucket of the game to set the ending margin.

Loyola shot just shy of 45 percent from the floor and 29.6 percent from three. Faulkner hit 42 percent of its shots from the field and 44 percent on its threes including 12 makes.

Loyola won the rebounding battle 48-33 while snagging 16 offensive boards that helped it account for an 18-5 advantage in second chance points.

The Wolfpack had three players score in double figures topped by Taylor Thomas's 28 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.

Adkins paced the Lady Eagles with 26 points and six rebounds. Burrows contributed 12 points while Micala Fisanick had 11.

Faulkner (2-4) returns to action Thursday when it travels to face SSAC foe Mobile in a non-conference matchup.
