Pikeville scores 28 in third quarter to top Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner gave itself a chance with a strong second quarter before falling to (RV) Pikeville 81-67 Friday night in the Thanksgiving Classic. The Lady Eagles outpaced UPike 20-13 in the second quarter thanks in large part to a 16-0 run.

Trailing 24-14 with 6:46 left before halftime, Ashlyn Adkins knocked down a layup before Micala Fisanick blocked a shot on the other end. The Lady Eagles followed with another Adkins make to narrow the gap to six. After another stop on the defensive end, Adkins dished to Channing Gafford for a three to narrow it to 24-21. Faulkner ratcheted up the defensive pressure again, allowing Adkins to narrow the deficit to one with another layup. Olivia Colson followed with a bucket to put Faulkner on top before Adkins turned a Megan Wilkinson pass into a three for the 28-24 lead. Another Colson bucket made the run 16-0 and forced a Pikeville timeout at 30-24 with 3:07 left in the frame. The teams traded shots into the locker room with Faulkner taking a 34-28 lead to half.

The Lady Eagle lead grew as high as eight and lasted until the 4:37 mark of the third quarter when Julia Parker cashed in a Morgan Stamper pass for a triple to tie the game. Alexis Reed knocked down two free throws to put the Lady Bears on top. Morgan Holland returned the advantage to Faulkner with a bucket at the 3:08 mark in the third. Faulkner got a Gafford basket and two Josie Edwards free throws to push the lead to 49-45 with 1:51 left in the third. Pikeville embarked on an 11-1 run to end the quarter with a 56-50 lead.
