Semifinals bound for second straight year

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner earned its second consecutive trip to the SSAC semifinals with four straight goals to flip an early 1-0 deficit into a 4-2 win as set pieces ruled the night Thursday at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.

After falling behind after a penalty in the 16th minute, the Eagles (5-10) answered back with a one-two punch combining Guilherme Mondaini, set pieces and two different centerbacks. Mondaini lofted a set piece into the box where Ross Harper drilled a header into the net in the 32nd minute. Just three minutes later, Mondaini delivered near post to Felipe Pineiro who's downward header beat the diving keeper Jamair Stewart to give Faulkner the lead for good.

Antoine Marques went on a solo run in the 66th, capitalizing on the high pressure and scored the third goal with a tremendous dribble to beat Brewton-Parker (4-10-1) captain Tyreke Moore's recovering run and find the back of the net. Ilan Tabet called bank in the 75th as his shot on target deflected high and looped in just underneath the crossbar for the fourth goal of the match.
The Barons got one back with Caleb Summerfield's header off a corner from Samuel Figeiro in the 85th to make the ending interesting, but Faulkner saw the match out to win its fourth consecutive first round match in the SSAC Men's Soccer Championship.

Nic Fischer stopped four shots in the match as Faulkner outshot the Barons 16-11 and with nice efficiency, placing nine shots on target to just six for the Barons.

Four of the five wins for Faulkner have been by four or more goals, and in each of those games at least four different players have scored.

Head Coach Gabriel de Queiroz has led the Eagles to the semifinals twice in his first two postseason terms at the helm.

The Eagles face NAIA's No. 4 and the SSAC regular season champion Mobile Rams Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex in town.
