Faulkner walks it off against Indiana Wesleyan

Faulkner (3-0) saved the best for last in game one of a weekend series with Indiana Wesleyan Friday. The Eagles tallied six of their 10 hits and all five of runs after they were down to their final four outs of the game, winning 5-4 in in walk-off fashion.

The decisive sequence of the contest started when Justin Lara coaxed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jonathan Villa followed with a single to center before giving way to courtesy runner Isaiah Brooks. With runners on the corners, nobody out, and Faulkner trailing 4-3. Isaac Phillips executed the perfect squeeze bunt to plate Lara and tie the game.

After Shawn Ross drew a walk to load the bases, Alex Arauz singled past the shortstop to drive in the game-winning run in the person of Brooks.
Faulkner trailed 4-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Indiana Wesleyan starter Jon Young left the game and the Eagles began to get to the Wildcat bullpen.

After the first two batters of the eighth struck out swinging, Ross singled to third to give the Eagles new life. Ben Hargis came on to run for the shortstop before Arauz and Tommy Reyes-Cruz each walked to load the bases. Sam Anthony did not waste the opportunity, singling to left to plate Hargis and Arauz, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Bo Seccombe followed with his third hit of the day to drive in Reyes-Cruz and cut the gap to 4-3.

Faulkner found itself fighting from underneath in the top of the first when an error led to three runs after July Sosa surrendered a double, a beanball, and a walk in consecutive batters with two away in the inning.
Sosa settled down quickly, going on to strike out 11 over six innings of work while allowing just one earned run. He left the game staked to the loss before Mike Battle held the Wildcat offense in check for the final three innings of the game.

Battle faced 12 batters over three innings of work, striking out two while allowing three hits and issuing no free passes. He qualified for the win with the Faulkner comeback completed in the ninth.
Indiana Wesleyan's starter, Young, worked 6.1 shutout innings while scattering four hits and three walks and striking out seven.
