MONTGOMERY, Ala. – A shorthanded Lady Eagles squad could not overcome a late surge and an amazing performance on the glass by Brewton-Parker, falling 84-76 at Tine Davis Gymnasium Friday night. Despite committing only seven turnovers, Faulkner was done in by a 35.7 percent shooting mark, and only 22.6 percent on threes, contrasted with the Lady Barons' 44.6 percent and 34.5 percent performance. Faulkner also gave up 53 rebounds and only collected 36. The visitors outscored Faulkner in the paint 44-34 and won the fast-break points battle 20-2.
It did not start off well for the Lady Eagles when, on the opening tipoff, they could not come up with the ball off
Ashlyn Adkins's tip on their own side of the court. Brewton-Parker picked up the loose ball and Keonya Mincey got the easy basket. The teams mostly traded runs for three quarters of play, and Faulkner led 41-37 at halftime.
The Lady Barons began the second half with a 15-6 run to take a five-point lead, but Faulkner ended the third quarter on a 10-3 stretch. Adkins used nifty ball-handling skills to get the bucket and stake her team to a 57-55 lead with two seconds left before the fourth quarter. However, similar to the teams' matchup around this time last year, Brewton-Parker dominated the final quarter to close out the win. The visitors outscored Faulkner 29-19 in the period, responding to a
Megan Wilkinson 3-point play with an 18-4 run, including three consecutive threes to kickstart it.
For more than five minutes, the Lady Eagles could not buy a basket, only scoring via free throws in the span. Wilkinson then hit three long-range shots in the closing minutes, but the Lady Barons responded each time to pull away.
Adkins was her usual team-leading self, racking up 20 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Wilkinson, in a rare start, took advantage with 16 points.
Micala Fisanick tallied nine points and seven boards.
Morgan Holland scored 11 points and six boards, and
Ryann Sylvester had eight points and two steals.
Alexia Galloway scored 20 points for Brewton-Parker. Samerria Bryant also had 20, with seven rebounds and two steals. Mayya Hopkins racked up 13 points, 11 boards, and three assists, while Trakeirra Head had 11 rebounds of her own.
The teams face off at Tine Davis Saturday afternoon, with Faulkner (11-11) going for its first win over the Barons in four tries this regular season.
