Three penalties spoil SSAC opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner outshot, out possessed and competed with last year's quarterfinalist and SSAC favorite William Carey, but three penalty kicks gave the Crusaders a 3-0 win at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon.

Gabriel de Querioz's head coaching debut heated up in the fifth minute when Adrien Alexandre connected on a Guilherme Mondaini set piece and twice shot on Buenyamin Yusufoglu but the German keeper stopped both point-blank efforts. Nine minutes later, Felipe Pineiro is whistled for a penalty which would be converted by Pablo Valera Vasquez Fraga. 90 seconds later, the whistle sounded again as Cristobal Romero grazed Jack Stainrod in the box, giving the Crusaders their second penalty which would be converted by Valera Vasquez Fraga.

In the 78th minute, Romero attacked a through ball outside the box and tripped the attacker. Initially, the challenge was ruled a penalty but the assistant moved the foul a couple feet outside the area. The free kick struck the wall and was ruled a handball inside the box, giving William Carey its third penalty kick in the match. Juan Ruiz Cabello completed the trio of spot kicks, pushing Faulkner out of contention in the match.

The Eagles outshot the Crusaders 10-5 with four shots finding the frame to William Carey's two, excluding the penalty kicks.

Faulkner travels to Gwinnett to face the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
