MARIETTA, Ga. - Life's high-octane attack proved too much despite 15 Faulkner blocks in a closely contested 3-1 (25-15, 21-25, 25-21, 25-22) road loss Tuesday night at The Eagles' Nest.
After sputtering in the first set with 10 attack errors to just five kills, the visiting Lady Eagles (3-4) pulled ahead in the second with a kill from
Kortney Barnes to break a 16-16 tie and give Faulkner a lead it wouldn't surrender. Consecutive assisted blocks from
Alexis McInroy set up
Macy Kemper's set point ace. McInroy received help from
Mallory Black on the first and
Julia Rice on the second.
The third set featured five lead changes and seven ties but Life (17-3) took advantage of a
Hannah Bryan service error with two kills to turn a 19-all tie into a three-point spread. Rice and Barnes blocked Lena Pucnik and Black killed the next point to bring it within one at 22-21, but the Running Eagles would take the next three to close the match.
A furious, late rally came up just short in the fourth. Fayola Lewis's kill at 13-12 started a 7-0 run for the hosts, but an instant impact sub from
Brianna Dukes sparked a segment of 8-2 play bookended by kills from
Alysa Vinson for Faulkner to bring the set within one at 23-22. Dukes joined three assisted blocks and tallied a kill in the run. The Lady Eagles couldn't knot the set up however as Life recorded its 67th and 68th kills of the match to close it out.
Vinson ended the match with 10 kills and 16 digs, leading the team in both categories.
Alyssa Stagner picked up a double-double as well with 20 assists and 10 digs. Bryan finished just one kill shy of a double-double with 12 digs. Seven Lady Eagles recorded three or more assisted blocks, paced by Barnes's six. Kemper assisted 15 kills and served two aces.
Life hit .216 with four attackers with double-digit kills.
Faulkner (2-0 SSAC) travels to Loyola (3-4, 1-0 SSAC) for an important early SSAC season matchup Friday at 7 p.m.
