MONTGOMERY, Ala. - An electric performance from Faulkner, firing 58 kills with a .202 attack percentage to knock off William Carey 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 26-24) who was a half-match behind first place Mobile in an SSAC matchup Friday night at Tine Davis Gymnasium.
Mallory Black paced the team's season-best attacking figures with a career-high 15 kills on a .583 attack percentage. The junior middle blocker nearly completed a double-double at the net with eight assisted blocks of the squad's 11 total blocks.
Faulkner made certain that the slow start last week in Hattiesburg, Miss. would not be duplicated in the return leg, surging to a 6-0 lead in the first set. Five times the Lady Crusaders brought the set within four points, but the Lady Eagles closed the set with a 6-1 run with two kills from
Hannah Bryan and one from
Julia Rice combining with three attack errors from reigning NAIA Attacker of the Week Jordan Stephens.
The second set featured 11 ties and five ties before the visitors capitalized on three Faulkner attack errors trailing 11-10 to take the lead for good, assuring at least four sets.
Three kills, two blocks and an ace sparked Faulkner to a 7-0 start in the third set. The arm's distance lead came to a 24-19 advantage before William Carey won four consecutive Lady Eagle set points before Bryan ended the set with a kill.
Mirroring the third, the fourth set saw Faulkner sprint to leads of 7-1 and 12-3 before the Lady Crusaders clawed back to eventually take the lead at 20-19. Logan Hamlin's kill handed William Carey set point, but Black's 15th kill set the stage for two visiting attack errors to officially flip the 3-1 loss a week prior.
