Faulkner scores 15 runs to finish sweep of Mobile

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Mobile mounted a late-inning comeback effort Saturday before Faulkner rallied for six in the bottom of the eight to put the game out of reach in a 15-9 Eagle victory and series sweep.

Faulkner held a 7-1 lead when Tyberius Correa struck out Tristan Hopgood to end the sixth. However, a wild pitch on strike three allowed Hopgood to reach. Brett Buck followed with a three-run homer to left, putting Mobile back in the game at 7-4.

After Jonathan Villa's sacrifice fly plated Justice Lucas in the home half of the sixth to put Faulkner up 8-4, Mobile rallied for three more in the seventh to cut the gap to 8-7. Stafford Quinnelly stepped to the mound for Faulkner with the tying and go-ahead runs aboard, inducing a pop out from the only batter he faced to get the Eagles off the hook with the lead.

Alex Arauz ripped a solo shot right in the home half of the seventh for a crucial insurance run for the Eagles. The Rams wasted little time getting the score back to within one as Lex Singleton tripled in Dalton Rone to narrow it to 9-8.

Villa's double to left-center with one out in the eighth started Faulkner's six-run rally that put the game away. He gave way to Isaiah Brooks who scored on Arauz's single to right. Tommy Reyes-Cruz then legged out an infield single that plated Arauz and Isaac Phillips to put the Eagles up 12-8. Lucas later parked a three-run homer over the scoreboard to leave the Eagles up 15-8.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the home half of the first. Sam Anthony hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a Villa grounder and scored on a passed ball. Arauz singled and later scored on an errant throw to make it 2-0. Faulkner added three more runs in the second as Reyes-Cruz singled in John Michael Mathews before Lucas hit a two-run homer.

Faulkner rallied for two more in the third inning as Mathews doubled home Phillips. Lucas then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Mathews, putting Faulkner up 7-1.

Correa (3-1) struck out seven batters over six and two-thirds innings of work while surrendering five earned runs for the win. July Sosa entered with a two-run lead in the eighth and struck out three over two innings of work for his first save of the season.

Faulkner (27-5, 12-3 SSAC) moves to second place in the SSAC standings with the sweep of Mobile. The Eagles sit one game behind Loyola in the SSAC.

Faulkner is set to travel to Talladega Tuesday for a doubleheader before heading to Blue Mountain next weekend.
