Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | by: Carter Moles

Second set superiority spurs SSAC starting success

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A dominant second set fueled the Lady Eagles (7-7, 1-0 SSAC) to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-5, 21-25, 25-18) win over Brewton-Parker (2-7, 0-1 SSAC) to open conference play Friday night in Tine Davis Gymnasium.

Hannah Bryan and Julia Rice continued to prove their danger on the net in the four-set contest, combining for 26 kills, which is just three fewer than the entirety of Barons opposite them. The second set demonstrated the duo's dynamic abilities. Jordan Stewart stepped back behind the service line at 6-3 in the second set and by the time she finished serving, it was a 14-3 set with four kills, two blocks and an ace. Sarah-Gracen Watts served the Lady Eagles into a 22-4 lead thanks to three kills from Bryan over an eight point stretch. In the 30 points, Bryan and Rice accounted for 12 with nine kills, two blocks and an ace.

Tied at 15 in the first set, Haven Owings took over. The Wetumpka, Ala. native's kill broke the tie and gave Faulkner a lead it would not surrender as she turned in two kills and a block over the next six points. After a service error, Owings got the ball back with yet another kill. She ended the night with eight kills on 16 swings.

After a rotated squad narrowly dropped the third set, Faulkner capitalized on a Brewton-Parker service error to sway a 12-all tie in the fourth into a comfortable finish with kills from Mackenzie Littrell and Rice around a Victoria Wheeler ace as part of a 9-1 run.

The reigning SSAC Defender of the Week put up another strong case amassing nine more blocks, including a solo. In her last nine sets, Julia Rice is averaging two blocks per set. She currently ranks 25th in the country in total blocks. The denials accompanied 12 kills.

For the 10th consecutive match, Bryan recorded double-figure kills with a floor-high 14. She also had two aces and eight digs.

Alysa Vinson led the team with 14 digs while Watts had 12. Watts, Stewart, Wheeler and Bryan all had multiple aces as the team fired 10.

Alyssa Stagner picked up five blocks to go along with her match-high 27 assists. As a unit, Faulkner picked up 11 blocks for the second straight match.

The Lady Eagles are now 53-4 all-time against the Barons and hold a 22 match win streak in which they have dropped just four sets.

Faulkner looks to push its four-match win streak to five Saturday afternoon against Middle Georgia (3-1, 0-1 SSAC) at home. The Lady Eagles have taken 15 of the last 16 sets against the Knights. First serve is at 2 p.m.
