Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | by: Carter Moles

Faulkner falls in thriller nearly five hours after kickoff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Seven goals, three ejections, 10 yellow cards, a two-hour rain delay and a golden goal characterized a nearly five-hour thriller Wednesday night at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium. The only thing missing was a winning goal for the Eagles as they fell to Thomas 4-3 in double overtime, overshadowing a stellar performance from Antoine Marques.

The match's decisive moment came in the 104th minute as the Night Hawks capitalized on the man advantage despite playing with just 10 men after three reds were shown within a minute of one another. Jack Vikstrom scored the winner as a cross from Regan McLaren was flicked on with a backheel by Hudson Cougill to the Swede in the heart of the box.

As lightning rolled into the area once again during a Faulkner soccer match just 10 minutes into the game, three goals had been scored and a yellow card already assessed. Marques's night began two minutes in as the Frenchman buried an effort into the net ceiling from the right wing. Just five minutes later, the Eagles faced a 2-1 deficit after Thomas centerback Andres Labrada buried a scramble in front of the net off a corner kick in the 6th. Target man McLaren scored his first goal of the night to put Thomas ahead just 68 seconds later after getting around Nic Fischer.

Following the delay, the teams picked up right where they left off with physical challenges for every ball. In the 41st, Marques equalized with an effort from the left side that bounced off the far post and in over the line.

Five minutes into the second half, Adrien Alexandre floated through the air to head in the go-ahead goal off a cross from Marques who recovered a cross that just missed his fellow countryman two touches before.

McLaren brought Thomas level in the 60th, converting a penalty after drawing the foul for his second of the night. The teams would see close chances and elevated emotions for the next 25 minutes. Ilan Tabet was home free to goal with just the keeper to beat in the 75th when he was seemingly pulled down from behind in the box as the shouts for a penalty fell unanswered. Following a second yellow card shown to Willian Da Silva in the 85th, Alex Pugh hit the post.

Less than 60 seconds of play later, a scrap broke out, seeing the benches clear to break up the fight before six cards were shown including a red to each team in the aftermath. The overtime periods calmed down seeing just two fouls over the final 14 minutes.

Faulkner (0-3) will travel to Birmingham-Southern to take on the Panthers for the first time in program history Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
