Lady Eagles charge past Chargers

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner (17-9) put together a massive inning in each game of Tuesday's doubleheader against first-year program Southeastern Baptist (0-30), sweeping the day 13-3 and 12-0, completing the five-game season sweep of the Chargers.

FAULKNER 13, SOUTHEASTERN BAPTIST 3 (5 innings)

The Lady Eagles overcame a sluggish start in game one to hang 10 runs in the fifth and win via the run rule. The final swing of the contest came in the form of a three-run homer by Erika Mitchell. She topped Faulkner in nearly every offensive category in the contest, with three hits, five RBIs and three runs scored.

Faulkner gave up two runs in the top of the first and trailed 2-0 until the bottom of the third when Shelbie Burbage singled home Kaileigh Harrison to narrow it to 2-1. The Chargers got another run in the fourth to move the advantage back to two before Faulkner equalized the game in the home half of the inning. Mitchell doubled home Gracie Pittman. Burbage then singled in Mitchell to tie the game.
Mitchell struck again in the fifth with a double that drove in Tara Ammons. Brianna Cagle followed with a single to drive in Mitchell. Burbage then doubled home the trio of Harrison, Cagle and Nicole Morrison. Caity Jo Lee then singled in Burbage. Ammons singled in Lee before the Mitchell homer.

Julianna Thames (3-2) worked the complete game win with three strikeouts.

FAULKNER 12, SOUTHEASTERN BAPTIST 0 (5 innings)

Faulkner picked up right where it left off in game one, scoring 12, highlighted by a blistering 9-inning stretch in the third.

The third nearly ended before it began as Ammons's single was followed with two groundouts, but Madison McKee was hit by a pitch to set up Nicole Morrison for a two-RBI double. Markie Hicks doubled on the next at bat before a pair of walks gave Lee two on for an RBI double of her own. Hicks would later score on a wild pitch. Tara Ammons's grounder to second proved perilous and caused an error to extend the inning and score two more runs. Taylor Ammons got her sister home with a fly to right that was misplayed by the outfielder, bringing herself to third. Colby Adams delivered a single to bring in Taylor Ammons to complete the massive inning.
Ivey Hill's return to the circle was about as good as one can ask for. Hill (2-0) allowed just two over the minimum while striking out four and working three perfect innings, hurling just 48 pitches.

The contest featured two Lady Eagles, Mackenzie Welch and Haley Ingram seeing their first collegiate at-bats.

Tara Ammons went two for three with two runs while Lee also collected two hits and scored twice. Morrison led the way with three RBIs.

Faulkner welcomes Tennessee Southern to Wynn Field Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The Lady Eagles defeated the Firehawks twice to open the season in Pulaski, Tenn.
