GULF SHORES, Ala. - A tough Sunday at the ballpark ended a good weekend on the beach as the Lady Eagles wrapped up the Gulf Coast Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Thomas and a 3-1 loss to William Woods. Faulkner ended 3-3 on the weekend and sits at 8-4 overall with two games to play before conference play opens Friday.
THOMAS 3, FAULKNER 0
The Lady Eagles missed some key chances in the loss to familiar foe Thomas.
A fourth inning sacrifice fly scored the opener for the Night Hawks and Faulkner seemed to repeat in the bottom half when an early departure from third on what seemed to be a sac fly from
Erika Mitchell ended the inning.
In the third, Faulkner couldn't cash in
Nicole Morrison's double and
Brianna Cagle's sacrifice bunt to push Morrison to third as a strikeout and popup ended the chance.
The Night Hawks added a couple of insurance runs in the seventh with a double to finalize the scoring.
Katelynn Inness allowed three earned over seven.
WILLIAM WOODS 3, FAULKNER 1
Courtney Haynie tallied her first collegiate hit and RBI in the second inning to put the Lady Eagles ahead, but it proved to be the only run of the afternoon for the team who stranded 11 runners in the loss.
Madison McKee singled up the middle and
Jordan Boyd bunted her over setting the stage for Haynie after
Kaileigh Harrison drew a walk in the second.
William Woods answered the call right back in the third and added two more in the fourth to score enough in the afternoon. Faulkner stranded two in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Julianna Thames had her best performance in the circle of the season allowing just four hits and two earned while going the distance in front of a defense with several web gems including some tough assists from Harrison.
Faulkner heads to Laurel, Miss. Wednesday to face Southeastern Baptist for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. for a final tune-up before conference play begins.
