Lady Eagles rout Tigers for season sweep

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Lady Eagles continued their offensive tear, scoring in 11 of its 13 innings with multiple runs in 10 of them while totaling 34 hits in a Saturday afternoon sweep at Stillman 16-6 and 13-2 to take all four games of the season series with the in-state and SSAC foe. Faulkner scored 57 runs this weekend alone and 68 this calendar week.

Erika Mitchell, Tara Ammons and Shelbie Burbage put on offensive showcases in game one of the afternoon, combining to go 13-16 from the plate with 10 RBIs. Colby Adams also had the hot bat with three hits and two RBIs in the come-from-behind win.

Faulkner carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the second, but the Tigers roared for five in the frame and added another in the third. However, the Lady Eagles shook of the road rust and plated four in the fourth off five hits to take the lead. Ammons delivered in Burbage and Caity Jo Lee with a double to cut the deficit to one. Mitchell tied the game with an RBI single before eventually scoring on a wild pitch after singles from Adams and Nicole Morrison. Schwieterman worked a three-up, three-down bottom half of the inning to get the bats back in her teammates' hands.

The first seven batters reached base in the fifth as a dropped sac fly from Ammons scored Kaileigh Harrison who started the inning with a single. Gracie Pittman's single scored two to take a 10-6 lead. Adams made it 11, scoring Pittman with a single. Schwieterman once again faced the minimum to carry the momentum.

Burbage swiped her third and fourth bases of the game in the sixth after a leadoff single. The senior has taken 92 bases in her Faulkner career and 28 this season. Her 2022 mark is currently third most in program single-season history behind her own 2021 total of 30 and her former teammate, now graduate assistant Taylor Eddy's 40. Mitchell and Adams turned in back-to-back singles to score Burbage and Ammons to push the lead to 13-6. Ammons plated Harrison in the seventh before Mitchell scored two more to finish the scoring onslaught for the game.

Schwieterman (9-5) earned the win with six strikeouts and just three hits and one run over 5.1 innings of relief. Mitchell went 5-6 with four RBIs and a run scored. Ammons touched home thrice while going 4-5 from the plate with five RBIs. Burbage scored four times while batting 4-5. Harrison and Lee each had a trio of runs scored.

Second verse, same as the first. Faulkner's bats continued to roll as the Lady Eagles picked up its 20th win against Stillman in as many contests. Ammons's single scored Lee before a solo shot from Pittman made it 2-0. The Prattville, Ala. native now has eight home runs, ranking 22nd nationally. As a team, Faulkner hit eight last season.

Burbage hit her second inside-the-park homer of the season in the second inning, splitting the charging defense and chasing them back to the fence to even attempt to get the speedster. Stillman got another run back in the bottom half to cut it to 4-2 but a three run top of the third assured that would be the closest the game would get.

Ammons started the inning with a double before scoring on a Mitchell double. Madison McKee's single set the stage for Morrison's two-RBI double to make it 7-2. The shortstop picked up another two-RBI knock in the next inning to push the lead to seven.

Faulkner forced the run-rule in the sixth as Mitchell's single scored Courtney Haynie who replaced Pittman who turned in a double to lead off the inning. Morrison's sacrifice fly scored Mitchell two at-bats later. Brianna Cagle's grounder caused issues for the Tiger defense to score McKee. Taylor Ammons finished the scoring with a single through the right side to bring Cagle home.

Katelynn Inness went 4.2 innings of hitless pitching and nine strikeouts. Pittman and Mitchell both went 3-4 from the plate. Morrison had a career-high five RBIs.

The Lady Eagles sit in fourth, tied in the loss column with Middle Georgia State having played two less games. Faulkner welcomes Brewton-Parker to Wynn Field Monday at 2 p.m. for a conference doubleheader after a 4-2 road trip.
