MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - The Lady Eagles allowed just two runs in a Friday sweep over current five-seed Brewton-Parker to take 3-1 and 5-1 wins on the road in the penultimate SSAC road doubleheader before the conference tournament begins.
FAULKNER 3, BREWTON-PARKER 1
In what could be a preview of the first round of the SSAC Softball Championship, the Lady Eagles seniors led the way to start their final road trip.
Tara Ammons delivered a Wendy's line of 4-4 with a double stack of doubles while
Meagan Schwieterman (11-7) allowed just three Barons to reach on the pitcher's accord and just two hits of no-walk, one-run pitching.
Brianna Cagle drove in the first run of the game with a two-out single after
Erika Mitchell drew a leadoff walk in the second before advancing to third off a
Colby Adams sac bunt and
Madison McKee groundout.
Shelbie Burbage led the third inning off with her seventh career triple before Ammons brought her home with the aforementioned double. Adams put the Lady Eagles in a 3-0 lead with a two-out single to left.
Brewton-Parker manufactured a run in the bottom half of the third around a leadoff hit by pitch, but Schwieterman stitched together a trio of three-up, three-down innings in the last four to close the door, only interrupted by an error in the fifth.
Burbage inched closer to the century mark with her 96th career stolen base in a two-hit performance. Mitchell drew a couple of walks in her second straight start at shortstop.
FAULKNER 5, BREWTON-PARKER 1
Faulkner responded to giving up the first run in the bottom of the second with four across in the third with a long one-out rally to take the road sweep. Cagle led off the inning with a single before reaching second on a sac bunt by
Kaileigh Harrison. Burbage singled into right as the Lady Eagles' right fielder beat the throw home. Back-to-back singles to left loaded the bases for
Gracie Pittman who drove in
Caity Jo Lee and Burbage with a single of her own to left center to take the lead 3-1. Mitchell also found left field to score Ammons.
Taylor Ammons got the job done in the sixth in a pinch hitting role as
Madison McKee was able to score from her batted ball that was misplayed by the second baseman to increase the lead that would be well protected by
Katelynn Inness. The righty struckout eight while allowing just one earned run.
Burbage and Lee each had two hits in the win.
Faulkner improves to 26-16 overall and 13-11 in SSAC play. The Lady Eagles, currently in fourth, head to Middle Georgia to take on the third-place Knights Saturday at noon central.
