Block party rallies Eagles past Barons

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner pulled itself out of a 10-point second-half deficit Tuesday night and claimed its first SSAC win of the season in an 87-79 victory over Brewton-Parker. The pivotal sequence came with 36.4 seconds left as when Jayden Cooper pulled up from the top of the key and buried a three that put his team up 82-79. A loose ball foul called against Brewton-Parker after the shot allowed Victor Muñoz to knock down a free throw and make it a two-possession game. Aidan Carter and J.C. Norris went perfect from the stripe in the closing seconds to ice the win.

Faulkner trailed by 10 with 15:42 to go before getting off the deck. A Norris three on the ensuing possession cut it to seven. After Grant Sanders got it back to nine, Muñoz hit a pair of free throws with 11:07 left before Norris made another three to cut it to 10:43. Muñoz narrowed it to four with 9:58 remaining. The Barons got the lead back to six by the six-minute mark but Norris answered again with a three. Jayden Cooper made a pair of three throws to cut it to one with 5:11 left and knocked down a layup with 4:33 to slice it to one again. Cooper then gave his team the lead with a layup with 3:56 on the clock. Two more trips to the free throw line and four more made free throws made it a personal 10-0 run for Cooper over a three-minute stretch, leaving Faulkner up 77-72 with 2:27 on the clock.

Faulkner shot 41.8 percent from the floor and grabbed 45 rebounds in the win. The Eagles also blocked 12 shots as a team, the second most in the program's modern era. The most came Feb. 21, 2009 against Southern Poly when the Eagles blocked 13.

Leading the way for the Faulkner block party was Cooper. The freshman guard swatted six shots, tying Darius McKnight's modern era record from the aforementioned Southern Poly contest.

Cooper finished his evening with 25 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and six blocks. Norris added 21 points, four rebounds and three assists. Jonathan Garcia notched 12 points and six rebounds.

Faulkner (5-4, 0-1 SSAC) returns to action Saturday when it travels to Middle Georgia State.
