MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Lady Eagles dropped a pair of games on senior day to No. 15 Mobile Tuesday afternoon at Wynn Field 1-0 and 7-3 to wrap up regular season play.
MOBILE 1, FAULKNER 0
The pitching duel featured just five hits between the two teams, but it was a sacrifice fly that proved to be the difference, lifting the guests past a gritty effort from
Ivey Hill in the circle.
In the sixth inning an error led to a runner on third with nobody out. The ensuing batter hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the lone run of the contest.
The two pitchers locked down opposing bats early and often Hill had entered the fourth without allowing a hit yet after
Chloe Davidson started the bottom of the first with a double but the Eagles would not record another hit until Davidson's sixth inning single.
Avery Harrell allowed just two over the minimum and needed all of it to get the win for the guests over the Eagle defense that allowed just three hits and no earned runs.
MOBILE 7, FAULKNER 3
The Lady Eagles jumped to a 3-1 lead, but six unanswered runs highlighted by a four run fifth inning saw the hosts wrap up the regular season competitive schedule with a loss.
Davidson started things once again for Faulkner in the third with a leadoff single.
Anna Purvis's sacrifice bunt put the game two pitcher on second before a
Gracie Pittman single put runners on the corners for
Erika Mitchell who hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the first run of the game.
Mobile answered in the top of the fourth, but Faulkner plated two in the bottom half to take the lead.
AnnaMarie Stooksbury drew a walk and
Abby Terrell doubled to put runners on second and third. Davidson singled again to score the first baseman before a throwing error from the catcher on a steal from Davidson allowed Terrell to scamper home.
The Rams scored four on four hits and stranded three in the top of the fifth to take over and take control of the game. The Lady Eagles tried to claw back in and had two on and nobody out in the bottom of the fifth, but Mobile substituted its first team all-American starting pitcher for another first team all-American hurler who proceeded to strike out the next three batters to end the threat. Davidson's single was the only base runner in the last two innings as the guests added one each inning to pad the lead.
Davidson was 5-7 on the day at the plate. Purvis was the only other Lady Eagle with multiple hits in the afternoon.
Faulkner will pick up two wins Wednesday via forfeit for its originally scheduled contest and will enter postseason play with a 26-19 overall record and a 14-14 SSAC mark.
The Lady Eagles now turn their attention to the SSAC Softball Championship in Decatur, Ala. Thursday May 4 where they will be the five seed and will face Stillman at 10 a.m. to start the tournament. With a win, they would play later that afternoon in the fourth game of the day against the top seed which could be any of Middle Georgia, Mobile and William Carey.
