MONTGOMERY, Ala. -
Ellie Alexander's goal from a scramble off a corner gave Faulkner (0-0-1) its second draw against an NCAA D1 foe in the last three matchups in a 1-1 stalemate on a hot Sunday afternoon at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium against Alabama State.
The moment came off the lone Faulkner corner as
Ainsley Lockwood picked out
Sofia de la Torre who passed to Alexander who found a perfect position inside the box and did not throw away her shot with a worm burner past Alabama State goalkeeper Lauryn Starwood to equalize in the 66th minute for her first career goal.
The strike canceled a 10th minute goal from Kassandra Schoen who capitalized on a great run and pass from Madison Chambers.
The sweltering heat of the midday sun on turf took its toll on the players as the heat required water breaks every 15 minutes. However, the backline held strong with three of the four playing all 90 minutes including a stellar debut at center back from
Ella Waldron.
Corinne Weissinger and Alexander were the other two to go the full 90. The defense limited opportunities as the Hornets were unable to put
Keila Cardeiro Carmona to the test too often with just six shots on goal allowed.
Eight Lady Eagles made their debut with starts from
Cassie Jackson,
Casey Davies and Waldron with
Daley Joyner,
Kandice Lumpkin,
Ashlei Bryant,
Vanessa Mateko and
Chloe Cooper subbing in.
The Lady Eagles improve to 4-4-2 all-time against Alabama State.
Faulkner travels to Gainesville, Ga. to take on Brenau Aug. 31.
