West Point, Ga. - The Faulkner Eagles traveled to Point University for Saturday's last game of the regular season. The Eagles picked up a much-needed win as they look to post-season play. The final score was 86-72 with a sweep over Point after Faulkner beat them at home earlier in the season.
The Skyhawks kept the game very close in the first half as they battled with the Eagles. Both teams traded buckets back and forth with several lead changes. As the first half ended the Eagles pushed to a seven-point lead from a three-pointer by
Sean McCurdy. With twenty seconds left on the clock and Victor Muñoz at the line, he sinks two free throws to send the Eagles up by nine at the half.
In the second half, the Eagles stomped on the gas and never looked back. Faulkner saw a lead of 16 throughout the half, but the Skyhawks continued to fight as they came back within seven points off a three from Justice Hayes.
With 1:57 left in the game, the Skyhawks were building a comeback, but the Eagles' offense was too much. With two free throws from
Jonathan Garcia and an immediate steal with a layup, he pushed the lead to 11. The Eagles and Skyhawks went back and forth until the last 30 seconds where Point had to foul. With several trips to the charity stripe and time running out, the Eagles put the game away.
All five starts saw double-digit scoring in today's action, with
Jayden Cooper leading the way. He had 22 points for the Eagles. Victor Muñoz had 19 points and eight rebounds.
Jonathan Garcia added 18 points, and
J.C. Norris had 14 points with six assists. To round out the stats
Sean McCurdy added a double-double seeing 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Faulkner (14-14 SSAC 9-11) finishes regular season play on a three-game winning streak and seventh in the conference as they await their opponent in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament.
