Eagles triumph over Toppers in comeback fashion

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Eagles battled back to overcome their late game deficit and triumph over the Blue Mountain Christian Toppers 73-71 Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles boasted a strong first half shooting performance hitting 57.14 percent of their shots from the floor and 53.85 percent from beyond the arc. Faulkner ended the first half with a 14-point lead and two players in double figures. The Toppers battled back and tied the game with under a minute to play with a layup at the 26 second mark to bring it to 71 all. In the remaining seconds J.C. Norris brought the inbound pass up the court and sent it in to Victor Muñoz who added a dish to the game winning layup from Cooper bringing the score to 73-71. Blue Mountain got one more look at it with a three from the corner in the closing seconds that drew iron twice before falling off the rim.

The Topper comeback started early in the second half with Blue Mountain cutting its deficit to within one off an 8-2 run from two triples and a fast break layup at 9:51. Muñoz connected with Jayden Cooper to convert a jumper and draw an and-one to increase the Eagle lead to four with 8:18 to go.

Four Eagle starters ended with double figure scoring. Muñoz led the Eagles with 21 points, four rebounds and five assists. Cooper added 16 points, five rebounds and six assists. Norris finished with 16 points and four assists. Sean McCurdy ended the game with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Faulkner (11-13, 6-10 SSAC) returns to action Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when it travels to Pulaski, Tenn. to face Tennessee Southern.
