MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Lady Eagles picked up the first win of the Colby Phillips era Saturday night with a 1-0 win over Brenau in an emotional and defensive match at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.
The decisive moment of the match came suddenly in the 31st minute when
Cassie Jackson pressed the Golden Tigers' goalkeeper Zyara Gonzalez and deflected the attempted pass into the net for the lone tally immediately following a dropped ball to restart after an injury to LIbby Graham.
Defensively, the Lady Eagles were ferocious and contained Brenau's attack with stellar backline play from
Corinne Weissinger and
Madlene Weissenbach anchoring the centerback roles with the fullbacks being kept fresh with a rotation of
Ainsley Lockwood,
Chloe Cooper,
Kailee Cox and Sharon Lopez.
In the dying moments of the match, Brenau created a great chance for their top goalscorer, Sarah Clark, but she missed the wide left with less than 10 seconds to play to seal the win for Faulkner.
The Lady Eagles took advantage of the handful of chances they got, being outshot 6-3 on frame. Keila Cardeiro was stellar in goal, saving all six shots faced as well as smothering a handful of long balls before they became opportunities.
Phillips picked up his first win as head coach of Faulkner Women's Soccer with the result.
