Sofia de la Torre's free kick wonderstrike was not enough to pick up a result against Middle Georgia Saturday night in a 2-1 loss at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium in SSAC action.
An even first half saw both teams miss some opportunities with heroic defending on the other side until the Knights found the breakthrough in the 66th minute.
After 11 offside decisions against the aggressive forward run style of MGA, the persistence paid off for Safiya Dean who was ruled to have timed her run right and slid home the opening goal. About five minutes later, Middle Georgia's Aroa Pena scored a dazzling free kick to take a 2-0 advantage, but Faulkner did not go away quietly.
Less than a minute later, Faulkner was fouled and up stepped
Sofia de la Torre to take a free kick on the left side of the box. The midfielder curled to the far post, off the crossbar and into the top bins for her first goal of the season and third of her career.
Faulkner had a couple of chances and kept the pressure on with the best chance to equalize coming with just six minutes to go when
Ashlei Bryant shot from the top of the box through traffic but was robbed by Hollie Keefe who kept the Knights ahead.
The Lady Eagles are 1-1 in SSAC play and currently sit in a three-way tie for sixth with Point and Mobile. Faulkner takes the road to take on the Roadrunners Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 central.
