MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner had a bit of a slow start as it fell behind 9-2 Thursday before surging to a 74-56 blowout victory over SSAC foe Point to take the Battle of I-85. The Lady Eagles put the game away with a 29-6 run over a period of 8:38 ranging from the end of the second quarter and into the middle of the third.
The run started with a
Ruthie Smith layup and a bonus free throw at the 3:20 mark of the second. Smith followed by parlaying a
Dee Guinn dime into a three before
Sarah Wisniowski knocked down a jumper with 48 seconds until the locker room.
Faulkner started the third quarter with a fury as
Keyarra Scottland flushed a pair of layups before
Nequoia Adams turned a Guinn dish into a three to move the lead to 44-26.
After an Antonia Pittman layup disrupted the 15-0 run, Faulkner got right back to work with a Smith jumper and a pair of Scottland free throws. Pittman followed with another layup and Adams answered by turning another Guinn pass into a triple. After a Jada Williams layup, Smith cashed in a Guinn assist for another three. Scottland made two more layups before the third quarter media timeout, moving the run to 29-6 and the lead to 58-32.
Faulkner shot 40.9 percent from the floor and won the rebounding battle 38-35 while also getting 15 steals as a team. Four Lady Eagles scored in double figures with Smith leading the way at 17 points to go along with nine rebounds. She also tied a program record with seven steals. Scottland added 16 points while Adams had 13.
Grace Anne Rose scored 11.
Faulkner (10-9, 4-5 SSAC) returns to action Saturday when it hosts Brewton-Parker for an SSAC showdown.
