Lady Eagles sputter in home conference tilt

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner's four-game win streak screeched to a halt Saturday afternoon in Tine Davis Gymnasium as the Lady Eagles fell to Brewton-Parker 87-76.

The Lady Eagles were undone by an abysmal second quarter in which they were outpaced 23-10. Faulkner shot a paltry 18.8 percent from the floor in that period while BPC put together a 17-3 run over the final 6:05 of the period to take a 44-33 lead into the locker room. The offensive drought came on the back end of a strong opening frame for Faulkner, which led 23-21 after the first 10 minutes.

The team played to a 19-all draw in the third period, leaving Faulkner battling from underneath for the remainder of the contest. The Lady Eagles got to within six by the 5:48 mark when Dee Guinn knocked down a layup and converted the bonus free-throw. However, the needle appeared to touch empty over the next 85 seconds as the Lady Barons put together a 6-0 stretch to run the margin back to 12.

After the media timeout, Faulkner mounted its final charge. A Ruthie Smith free throw and a Keyarra Scottland bucket narrowed it to nine. After a BPC make, a steal by Scottland created an easy transition layup to get it to 77-70 with 2:38 to go. From there, the free throw line determined the remainder of the game as BPC ran the lead back to double digits in the final minute.

BPC won the rebound battle 40-37 while also taking points-in-the-paint 40-32. The Lady Barons also got 40 points from their bench unit to help put away the game. Faulkner shot 42.9 percent from the floor in the game while struggling to limit a BPC team that shot 51.7 percent from the field. The Lady Barons found great success with high-percentage looks as they scored 40 of their points in the paint.

Smith paced Faulkner with 21 points to go along with 14 rebounds as well as three steals and three blocks. Guinn finished with 17 points while Scottland had 10.

Faulkner (10-10, 4-6 SSAC) returns to competition Thursday when it hosts Life University in a key SSAC contest at 5:30 p.m.
