Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Jeremy D. Smith

Eagles’ second half leaves Phoenix in ashes

LEBANON, Tenn. - Faulkner found its footing late and won another close game Wednesday night as it downed Cumberland 75-71 on the road. The Eagles got a pair of KJ Rogers free throws in the final second to ice the two-possession win, marking both the largest margin of victory as well as the first regulation outcome of the season for the Eagles.

A 10-2 Phoenix run in the first half put Faulkner behind with 5:07 until the break. Another quick 8-3 Cumberland spurt left the Eagles down 33-26 with 2:27 until intermission.

Faulkner closed the half strong with a 6-2 stretch on a pair of Francois-Dony Baba buckets sandwiched around a Joe Webster make.

Trailing 35-32 in the locker room, Faulkner translated the success from late in the first half to the final 20 minutes.

A pair of Rogers free throws followed by a Rogers layup left the Eagles down 37-36. Jordyn Turner-Durley then helped on a Gabriel Rivera three with 18:02 left. The lone make of the night by the veteran forward put Faulkner on top 39-37 and the Eagles never trailed again.

The margin stayed within two possessions until a Kamal Green II triple with 13:09 to go stretched the advance to eight. Faulkner got it to as high as 10 when Rogers and Tanner Vogel combined for a 6-0 run to leave the Eagles up 65-55 with 7:57 remaining.

Cumberland got back in it with an 8-0 stretch in the final 90 seconds before fouling to put Rogers on the line, where he made both looks to put the game away.

Rogers scored 24 of his game high 31 points in the second half while also leading the team with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. The senior is averaging 32.3 points per game over the season's first three contests with each performance outpacing his career high from previous seasons. Gideon Harris added 11 points.

Faulkner (3-0) returns to action Saturday, Nov. 8 when it travels to back to Tennessee for a tilt with Freed-Hardeman University. That game tips at 4 p.m.
