Faulkner drops a pair of sweeps on SSAC Tourney Day 1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner (9-21, 3-13 SSAC) will close out its season and play in Pool A of the SSAC Championship on Friday against top-seed and No. 22 Mobile as it lost in a pair of sweeps against Blue Mountain Christian (22-7, 11-5 SSAC) and Tennessee Southern (15-11, 8-8 SSAC).

Blue Mountain Christian 3, Faulkner 0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-10)

Faulkner never could get off the ground against the Toppers, as it was outhit by BMCU .413 to -.048 and the offense stayed in the negative in the first and third frames. Seven of Faulkner's eight points in the opening set came via Topper errors. The second saw BMCU win the hitting battle just .324 to .216 as the teams traded the lead seven times after Allyse Rudolph and Charlee Jordan gave Faulkner its first lead with kills to start the set. The Toppers scored four of the next five as the teams traded points to end the frame. After spotting BMCU a 3-0 lead in the third, the Lady Eagles got points back after each Topper run to make it 15-10, but the Toppers scored the last 10 points to end it in three.

UT Southern 3, Faulkner 0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-18)

The Lady Eagles came in ready just over an hour after the first match, as they took an early lead and used a 6-0 run to go ahead 11-4 with kills by Jordan, Rudolph and Kaleigh Moss, a Jordan ace, a block by Moss and Riley Deem and a solo block by Deem. Deem and Kendall Rice tallied six total kills with one solo each. From there, the Firehawks responded to each Faulkner point, tying it back up 20-20 while scoring seven of the last nine points. The teams traded runs once again as well as tie scores and leads before UTS pulled away to go up 2-0. Most of the third set followed the same theme. Leading 14-13, the Firehawks strung together a 5-0 and 4-0 run to finish it off.

The Lady Eagles' road ends against the Rams (27-2, 14-2 SSAC) tomorrow at 11 am.
