Faulkner softball takes doubleheader from BPC

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner got solid pitching and timely hitting to take both ends of a doubleheader from SSAC foe Brewton-Parker Friday afternoon.

FAULKNER 4, BREWTON-PARKER 3

The Lady Eagles rallied in the bottom of the sixth to plate three runs and steal game one 4-3. After falling behind 3-1 in the top of the inning and turning to Lana Atkins in relief in the circle, Faulkner got the offense going with a leadoff single from Addyson Jarman. She stole second before a walk to Madelyn Becker and a single from Abby Terrell loaded the bases. Sarah Williams followed with a single to right to plate Jarman and cut it to 3-2. Kelbi Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk to get pinch-runner Eavie Polk home and tie the game. Campbell Hecklinski then dropped down a bases-loaded squeeze bunt to Terrell home and take the 4-3 lead.

Atkins, who put out the first in the sixth, returned for the seventh to work around a one-out single by striking out one of the top hitters in the conference and then inducing a grounder to end the game.

The Lady Eagles got their first run of the game in the top of the first inning when Gracie Pittman reached on an error to plate Chloe Davidson, who had three hits in the contest.
Reece Patterson covered five innings in the circle before leaving in the sixth. Atkins (2-1) struck out one over two scoreless innings of work for the victory.

FAULKNER 6, BREWTON-PARKER 0

The Lady Eagles took control from the outset in game two of the day. Anna Catherine Segrest singled up the middle and stole second before scoring on a Jarman double in the first for the 1-0 lead. Jarman then stole third and scored on a throwing error to make it 2-0.
Terrell started the trouble in the second inning when she hit a leadoff single to left and stole second. She moved to third on a Williams sacrifice bunt and scored on a Johnson bunt single to make it 3-0.

The defense showed up in big spots to help Hailey O'Brien work out of jams throughout the game. With two on and nobody out in the third, Davidson fielded a ball up the middle and flipped to Segrest at short for the force out at second. Catcher Kensley Wesley picked a runner off the bag at first for the second out and O'Brien induced a pop-up to get out of the inning.
The Barons put two more aboard in the fourth and looked to extend the inning on a backspin flare the tried to spin back toward home plate. Becker dove to snare the ball just before it hit the ground, ending the inning and nullifying the scoring threat.

BPC put two more aboard with nobody out in the fifth when Ashtyn Pannell ran down a flyball to left ahead of a sacrifice bunt for the second out. O'Brien then induced a fly to right to get out of the frame.

Faulkner added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Johnson singled to open the inning and stole second before scoring on Segrest's single to center for the 4-0 advantage. Segrest then scored on a wild pitch for the 5-0 lead.

The Barons looked to create one more rally in the sixth when the leadoff hitter singled up the middle. But Segrest snuffed it out when she fielded a ball up the middle, stepped on the bag at second and threw to first for the double play.

Faulkner tacked onto the lead with two out in the sixth as Terrell roped a triple down the rightfield line and scored on a Williams single up the middle.
O'Brien (6-5) worked a complete game shutout with one strikeout, two walks and six hits allowed for the victory.

Faulkner (14-6, 5-3 SSAC) returns to action Saturday when its hosts Thomas University at 2 p.m.
