Lady Eagles sweep Campbellsville

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner won a pitchers' duel and then a slugfest Tuesday to take both ends of a doubleheader from a Receiving Votes Campbellsville team.

FAULKNER 3, CAMPBELLSVILLE 2

On a day in which the wind was blowing out toward left field with gusts approaching 40 miles per hour, Reece managed to keep the ball in the yard for seven innings while scattering nine hits and three walks. She struck out three and allowed two earned runs in the effort to move to 5-0 on the season as she led her team to a 3-2 win.

Campbellsville got to Patterson in the third inning when a Jessie Daniels sacrifice fly plated Korey Harris for the 1-0 lead. Caroline Pitcock later singled to left to plate Rylee Warner and stake the Lady Tigers to a 2-0 lead.

Campbellsville then retired the first two Eagle hitters in the home half of third to threaten the shutdown inning. Anna Catherine Segrest avoided the clean frame when she singled to center. Addyson Jarman followed with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 2-1. The score stayed there until the fifth inning when Jarman roped a one-out single to left. Gracie Pittman followed with a triple to tie the game and force a pitching change. Madelyn Becker then greeted the new pitcher rudely as she singled home Eavie Polk for the 3-2 lead.

Patterson worked around traffic in the sixth and the seventh to lock down the win. Faulkner managed eight hits in the game with three of them coming off the bat of Jarman.

FAULKNER 16, CAMPBELLSVILLE 12

As the wind gained intensity during the second game of the twinbill, the scoreboard got much more of a workout. The teams combined for 31 hits and 28 runs in the contest with Faulkner scoring in every inning for the 16-12 victory.

Campbellsville put up a two-spot in the first inning, but the Lady Eagle lineup wasted little time firing right back. Chloe Davidson legged out an infield single to start the inning before Segrest dropped down a sacrifice bunt. Jarman followed with a homer to left to tie the game.

The Lady Tigers struck for four runs in the top of the second, widening the lead to 6-2 on a three-run homer by Warner. Undaunted, Faulkner responded with a seven-run home half. Of the second. Kelbi Johnson singled to center with one away to bring up Ashtyn Pannell, who had the pivotal at-bat in the inning when she blasted the ninth pitch off the left field fence to plate Johnson. Davidson followed with a single to put runners on the corners.

Segrest dropped down a squeeze bunt to drive in Pannell and cut the deficit to 6-4. Jarman drew a walk before Pittman singled home Davidson to make it 6-5. Becker followed with a two-RBI double. Sarah Williams then doubled in Becker before making it home on an Abby Terrell single for the 9-6 lead.

Campbellsville regained the advantage in the top of the third when Warner hit a grand slam to put the Tigers up 10-9. Pannell lit the fire in the third when she opened the inning with a single before Davidson drew a walk. Another Segrest bunt moved the runners up before Jarman singled the home for the 11-10 lead. Pittman added to the lead with a two-run homer to push it to 13-10.

Jarman doubled home Davidson in the fourth to make it 14-10. Williams scored on a passed ball in the fifth to stretch the lead to 15-10. Campbellsville got two across in the sixth to narrow the gap before Pittman hit her second homer of the game to cap the scoring.

Lana Atkins (1-0) pitched the final four innings of the game, striking out two and allowing two unearned runs while issuing no walks for her first Faulkner victory.

Faulkner (9-1) hosts Brenau Wednesday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader before traveling to the Gulf Coast Invitational Friday.
