SILVIS, Ill. -
Rodolphe Cicala continued to rewrite the Faulkner history books with a runner-up finish in the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship May 20-23 at TPC Deere Run with a five-under-par finish, being one of six golfers to go under-par over the 54-hole event.
Cicala completed the highest nationals finish by being one of eight players to shoot even par or better on the final day to prop up an unreal six-under-par opening round. Cicala opened the first round Monday on the back nine and holed out a birdie to set the tone for his tournament. He responded to going one-over-par three holes later with birdies on four of the next five holes to hit the turn in the round that took two days to complete due to weather. He played a clean front nine with three more birdies to go three-under-par to card a 65. Despite the incredible round, Cicala had to chase a historic round from Dalton State's Jack Whaley who went onto win the event after a 10-under-par 61 first round, just two shots off the course record on a regular PGA Tour stop.
Cicala turned in 11 pars in the second round to steady and up-and-down round with bogeys and birdies scattered to finish the day one-over-par 72 and still within striking distance of the title.
In the final round, Cicala balanced each bogey with a birdie to end even par and finish second place, gaining a shot on first place Whaley.
He ended the tournament with the second most birdies of anyone in the 156 golfer field with 14.
Cicala concluded his season with seven top three finishes and four crowns including the SSAC championship.
