Eagles outfly Skyhawks in Battle of I-85

Box Score WEST POINT, Ga. – Faulkner trailed in the early going before course correcting with ferocity Saturday in a 112-82 victory over SSAC foe Point. For the second time this season, the Battle of I-85 got out of hand as Faulkner ran its lead as high as 36 in the victory.

Saturday's scoring output marks the largest of the Scott Sanderson era, surpassing the 111 the Eagles scored against Point on January 17 and the 110 they put up against the same program in 2018.

Faulkner trailed 20-16 with 12:22 remaining in the first half. A Micah Thomas free throw at that moment served as the opening salvo of a 25-8 run that put the Eagles up 41-28 with 5:25 left in the frame. By halftime, the run stretched to 38-19, and Faulkner found itself on the better side of a 54-39 margin.

After missing Thursday night's contest at Brewton-Parker, K.J. Rogers proved effective in the tilt with the Skyhawks. He knocked down a pair of jumpers to open the second half scoring and ignite an 18-8 run that ballooned the lead to 25 and effectively put the game away by the 14:04 mark.

Point tried to battle back with a 20-12 run of its own that got the Skyhawks to within 17 with 7:21 left. But the effort proved to no avail as the Eagles went on a crushing 24-5 blitz over the next four minutes to crank the margin to 108-72. Francois-Dony Baba starred with eight of his points occurring during that stretch. The Eagles knocked down nine of 10 shots from the floor during the run while making all four of their three-point attempts and committing zero turnovers.

Faulkner won the rebounding battles 47-28 and dominated second-chance points 18-4. The Eagles outscored Point 44-20 in the paint and shot a healthy 58.1 percent from the field in the game.

Five Eagles posted double-digit scoring efforts with Baba's 20 leading the way. Rogers added 19 to go along with four rebounds and six assists. Gabriel Rivers had 16 while Jordyn Turner-Durley added 13 points and five assists. Tanner Vogel delivered another double-double, his eighth of the season and seventh in his last nine games.

Faulkner (18-7, 12-3 SSAC) returns to action Thursday night when it hosts William Carey at 7:30 p.m. before welcoming Loyola Saturday, Feb. 14 for a 2 p.m. tip. The Eagles' remaining scheduled contests are all in Alabama as the final road game takes place in Mobile Feb. 21 before the SSAC tournament takes place in Montgomery the following week.
